The Shrinking Salton Sea
2024

This project aims to tracking the shrinking Salton Sea, which is evaporating and getting smaller each year. The exposed playa constitues a public health hazard, due to the agricultural runoff that has been concentrated in the water of the Salton Sea.

Bombay resident Irondad runs around the perimeter of the Salton Sea annually (since 2023) to track the receding shoreline. The map displays the GPX tracks of his runs, alongside a 2007 topographic survey from the CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife.

Determining the 2007 shoreline took a bit of manual work, as the outer depth contour (2007 shoreline) was not a continuous line, as shown by the final in-process screenshot.
